Aino Aalto Savoy Armchair in Birch, Leather and Fabric, Artek, Finland, 1940s

An early and rare Savoy Armchair designed by Aino Aalto, featuring a solid birch structure with gently curved armrests and tapered legs. The armrests are wrapped in ribbed leather, creating a functional grip and a distinctive graphic rhythm along the horizontal line of the chair. The seat and back are upholstered in grey wool, offering a calm contrast to the warm tone of the birch. The overall form is compact and architectural, with a slightly reclined back that ensures supportive comfort.

The model was originally designed for the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki, one of the most important interiors connected to the Aaltos and the early years of Artek. Production of early Artek furniture was carried out by Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, a cabinetmaker responsible for manufacturing several of the company’s early models. Founded in 1935, Artek became central to the development of Finnish modernism, promoting functional design rooted in natural materials and craftsmanship. The Savoy Armchair reflects these ideals with clarity and structural honesty.

This armchair works equally well as a lounge chair in a living space, reading corner or study. Its relatively compact dimensions make it versatile, while the combination of birch, leather and wool gives it warmth and depth. A collectible piece of Nordic design heritage from the 1940s, with strong historical relevance and timeless character.
