Chandelier Model 1374/5 by Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy, Finland, 1930s
A rare early chandelier by Paavo Tynell, produced by Taito Oy in the 1930s as Model 1374/5. This five-arm design combines brass, painted metal and softly opaline glass shades, reflecting the refined decorative language of Tynell’s pre-war work. The chandelier features scalloped, tulip-shaped glass shades, each held by fluted brass holders, along with a dark green painted central dish adorned with pressed floral brass ornaments — a detail characteristic of Tynell’s early ornamental metalwork.
A slender stem wrapped in natural fibre leads up to a brass canopy, while a group of small glass pendants adds a subtle glimmer to the center. The overall expression is elegant and balanced, bridging Nordic functionalism with the more decorative aesthetic that shaped Tynell’s designs in the 1920s and 30s.
This chandelier brings warmth, atmosphere and a sense of heritage to an interior — especially suited for dining rooms, living spaces or entrance halls where its soft, diffused light and handcrafted details can be fully appreciated.
