Charles & Ray Eames ‘DAR’ Plastic Armchairs, Vitra

A pair of ‘DAR’ armchairs by Charles and Ray Eames, produced by Vitra in 2013. The model, originally designed in 1950, is part of the iconic Plastic Chair group, first introduced at the Museum of Modern Art’s ‘Low-Cost Furniture Design’ competition. These examples feature moulded white polypropylene shells with upholstered red seats and backs, set on the recognisable Eiffel bases in chromed steel rod.

The Plastic Chairs were a revolution in post-war furniture design, introducing mass-produced seating in moulded synthetic materials. The DAR (Dining Armchair Rod base) combines organic contours with an industrial base, exemplifying the Eameses’ vision of uniting form, function and affordability. Since 1957, Vitra has been the licensed European manufacturer, continuing production to this day with updated materials that reflect both sustainability and durability standards.

With their graphic form and vivid colour, these chairs bring a timeless modernist mood to any interior. Equally suited for dining, work or lounge areas, they remain one of the most recognisable and versatile chair designs of the 20th century.
