Functionalist Bedside Tables by Pauli Blomstedt, J. Merivaara, Finland, 1930s

A rare and architecturally striking pair of functionalist bedside tables designed by Pauli Blomstedt and produced by J. Merivaara in Finland during the 1930s.

These pieces embody the essence of early Nordic Functionalism: clean geometry, industrial materials, and a clear emphasis on utility. The tubular steel frame creates a light yet sturdy structure, supporting a floating upper shelf and a compact cabinet with hinged door. The soft ivory-painted wooden elements contrast beautifully with the cool steel frame, resulting in a refined yet utilitarian expression.

The cantilevered upper shelf provides practical surface space while enhancing the airy architectural profile. The lower cabinet offers concealed storage, fitted with original metal knobs that reinforce the industrial character. The rounded tubular base is both structurally efficient and visually balanced — a hallmark of Blomstedt’s rational design language.

Designed at a time when modernism was redefining Finnish interiors, these tables represent an important shift toward functional clarity and material honesty. Pieces by Pauli Blomstedt are scarce on the market, especially in pairs.
