Model 401 lounge chair designed by Alvar Aalto for Artek, originally introduced in 1933. One of Aalto’s most celebrated designs, the Model 401 combines his pioneering bent laminated birch construction with a generously proportioned seat and high back, offering exceptional comfort while maintaining a light, architectural appearance.
The chair features a natural lacquered laminated birch frame with Aalto’s characteristic cantilevered armrests and runners, paired with its original bast fiber upholstery in a warm natural tone. The sculptural silhouette and organic materials reflect Aalto’s human-centered approach to modernism, balancing functionality, comfort, and timeless aesthetics.

The laminated birch frame shows only light signs of age and use. The original bast fiber upholstery is in good overall condition with a natural patina. One lower rear corner has fraying from use (shown in the photos), while the rest of the upholstery presents well.
