Paavo Tynell Art Deco Wall Sconce Model 7004 for Taito Oy, 1930s

An original Finnish Art Deco wall sconce designed by Paavo Tynell, model 7004, produced by Taito Oy. The sconce is made in patinated brass and features a tall, vertically fluted backplate with a stylised fan-like form. Two curved arms extend forward symmetrically, each fitted with a candle-style light and drip-detail sleeve. The dark green patina shows natural variation and wear, enhancing the sculptural relief and expressive surface.

This model dates to the late 1920s to early 1930s, a formative period in Tynell’s career and in Finnish decorative lighting more broadly. At this time, Nordic Art Deco combined classical references with simplified geometry and careful craftsmanship. The design reflects Tynell’s early interest in rhythm, proportion, and the interaction between metal surfaces and light—elements that would remain central throughout his later work.

When illuminated, the sconce casts a warm, atmospheric light that emphasizes the depth of the backplate and creates soft shadow play on the wall.
