Pair of Armchairs in Suede and Woven Cord by Werner West, Finland, 1930s

A rare pair of Finnish armchairs combining solid stained elm construction with natural materials and expressive detailing. The frames are built from elm with a warm stained finish, giving the wood a deeper, more uniform tone while still allowing the grain to remain visible. The structure features softly rounded edges and a slightly sculptural profile, particularly in the curved armrests and shaped joints. The seats are upholstered in suede, showing a soft surface with visible patina, while the backrests are handwoven in thick cord, forming a geometric pattern that adds both structure and texture.

Designed by Werner West and produced by Keravan Puusepäntehdas in the 1930s, the chairs reflect a period in Finnish design where functionalism met traditional craftsmanship. The use of solid wood, visible joinery and woven elements points to influences from both Nordic folk traditions and early modernist thinking. Keravan Puusepäntehdas was known for its high-quality cabinetmaking, and pieces from this period often emphasise durability and honest construction.
